Belly Button Hernia After Pregnancy: Symptoms, Treatment, and When to Consider Repair

Pregnant woman who may have umbilical hernia in Austin, TX

If your belly button changed from an “innie” to an “outie” during or after pregnancy, you may have developed an umbilical (belly button) hernia. Pregnancy places a lot of pressure on the abdominal wall, stretching the muscles and connective tissues around the belly button. While some post-pregnancy changes improve over time, an umbilical hernia typically does not heal on its own and may require surgical repair, such as a tummy tuck.

Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Andrew Trussler helps women restore both the appearance and function of their abdomen after pregnancy. Depending on your anatomy and goals, an umbilical hernia repair may be performed alongside diastasis recti repair or a tummy tuck to strengthen the abdominal wall for a flatter, more supported midsection.

What Is an Umbilical Hernia?

An umbilical hernia is an opening or weakness in the abdominal wall surrounding the belly button that allows fatty tissue or, in some cases, a portion of the intestine to push through.

Pregnancy is one of the most common causes because the growing uterus places increasing pressure on the abdominal muscles and the natural opening at the belly button.

Common signs of an umbilical hernia include:

  • A bulge or “outie” belly button
  • Swelling near the navel
  • Pain or tenderness, especially when lifting, coughing, or exercising
  • A bulge that becomes more prominent when standing or straining

Will a Belly Button Hernia Go Away After Pregnancy?

Unlike stretched skin or weakened abdominal muscles, an umbilical hernia does not typically close on its own after pregnancy.

In many cases, the hernia remains stable, but it can gradually enlarge over time or with future pregnancies. Although uncommon, a hernia can become trapped (incarcerated) or lose its blood supply (strangulated), making prompt medical evaluation important if you experience severe pain, discoloration, nausea, vomiting, or a bulge that cannot be pushed back in.

Umbilical Hernia vs. Diastasis Recti

Many women who develop an umbilical hernia after pregnancy also have diastasis recti, a separation of the abdominal muscles.

While these conditions are related, they are not the same:

  • Umbilical hernia: An actual defect or opening in the abdominal wall.
  • Diastasis recti: A widening of the connective tissue between the abdominal muscles without a true hole.

When both conditions are present, repairing only the hernia may leave the surrounding abdominal wall weak. Addressing the diastasis at the same time can improve core support and create a more durable repair.

When Should an Umbilical Hernia Be Repaired?

Not every hernia requires immediate surgery, but you should schedule an evaluation if you notice:

  • Persistent pain or discomfort
  • An enlarging belly button bulge
  • Difficulty exercising or lifting
  • Symptoms that continue several months after pregnancy
  • Plans to restore your abdomen after childbearing is complete

Many surgeons recommend waiting until your body has recovered from pregnancy before elective repair. If you are considering future pregnancies, your surgeon can discuss the best timing for surgery.

Can a Tummy Tuck Repair an Umbilical Hernia?

Yes. For many women, an umbilical hernia can be repaired during a mini or full tummy tuck (abdominoplasty).

Combining procedures may allow your surgeon to:

  • Repair the hernia
  • Correct diastasis recti
  • Remove excess skin
  • Improve abdominal contour
  • Strengthen the abdominal wall

Your treatment plan will be based on the size of the hernia, the degree of muscle separation, and your cosmetic goals.

What Is Recovery Like?

Recovery varies depending on the procedure performed. Many patients return to light daily activities within the first week, begin light cardio after several weeks, and gradually resume lifting and core exercise as directed by their surgeon.

Following your post-operative instructions carefully helps support proper healing and long-term results.
