Kybella® now available in Austin, TX at Andrew Trussler, MD PLLC. Kybella® is an injectable treatment which destroys fat cells under the chin. Kybella® is deoxycholic acid which is a naturally occurring substance which dissolves fat. It is FDA approved for treatment of the “double chin”. Mesotherapy was first introduced in Europe as a non-invasive body contouring treatment. It combined subcutenous injections of substances which help dissolve fat with deep tissue massage. It was popularized in France and is still utilized today. Kybella® utilizes this mesotherapy principle to deliver an effective non-invasive treatment for to thin localized fat deposits under the chin which can refine the neck profile.
Kybella® is a synthetic deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body, specifically a bile salt, that helps break down and dissolve fat.
What Are My Kybella® Options?
Kybella® injections are offered as an in-office service for both men and women. Ideal candidates are healthy patients with realistic goals and defined areas for treatment. Treatment Options For Kybella®:
- Neck (SUBMENTAL FAT PAD) to reduce the fat deposit in this area for to help refine and smooth the neck line.

Through a series of tiny injections in a grid fashion under the chin localized in the target fat pad, Kybella® can help smooth smooth the neck and jawline. Kybella® is dispersed in “cc’s” of the drug and is dispensed in vials which are loaded into syringes prior to injection. The number of cc’s per area is somewhat standard by utilizing the grid, but can be variable in patients with thick fat pads.
Kybella® injections can be individualized for each neck and each patient. Consider the area of the neck that you would like treated and discuss them during your consultation. A double chin can be caused by the enlargement of the submental fat pad which can be caused by weight gain, genetics, aging. Options include conservative diet and excersise, refractory submental fullness could be addressed with liposuction and/or a neck lift or facelift though these are typically performed in the operating room. Kybella® is an in-office option which can help smooth and refine the chin.
Kybella® affects only one component of the neck line (fat), and for a more complete lower face and neck rejuvenation: a neck lift combined with skin care and/or skin resurfacing may be considered. Dr. Trussler also encourages preventative skin measures such as sun screens and smoking cessation.
Kybella® is a reliable cosmetic treatment which is safe and effective for decreasing the fat pad under the chin. Kybella® is delivered through small injections likened to a TB test or insulin shot. It is performed in the office using topical numbing cream and/or ice for comfort. The procedure takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. Kybella® needs to be injected into the fat beneath the chin and will destroy fat cells. The body then metabolizes the destroyed cells in this area, which can be associated with temporary swelling in the areas of injection, but reduces the number the fat cells and the ability to accumulate fat in this area. Variable number of vials of Kybella® are injected depending on thickness and area of the fat pad. In general 1 to 2 vials are injected at a time. Results are noticeable but they are not immediate. It will generally be at least 2 treatments separated 1 month apart. It may take up to 6 treatments to achieve a final result.
Men and women considering Kybella® treatment should have realistic expectations of what the procedure can do. It is also important that patients seeking treatment with Kybella® are in good physical health, are not pregnant or nursing, and do not have a neuromuscular disorder or previous adverse reaction to the product.You should discuss the desired results with Dr. Trussler to ensure that your goals can be achieved.
Kybella® is a cosmetic in-office procedure that is safe, reliable with little to no down time. The areas of treatment are identified, marked with a grid, and then topical anesthetic and/or cooling packs are applied to the areas to help make the injections comfortable and limit bruising. The Kybella® is injected with a fine needle as a suspension in liquid form in very small volumes to deliver a relatively standard amount to the treatment areas under the skin. Ice is applied after the injections to limit swelling and bruising. The entire treatment may take 15 minutes and you can return to normal activities that same day. To achieve maximal results, it may require up to 6 treatments given 1 month apart
Immediately following the Kybella® treatment at our office in Austin, TX, Dr. Trussler emphasizes the use of ice packs every 4 to 6 hours for the first day, as well as proper hydration to help the bodies elimination of the fat by-products. This will help limit any potential bruising and swelling at the injection sites. Swelling after Kybella® is limited usually to just the areas of injections and may be present for up to 10 days. Ice and massage can help with this. Normal activity including physical activity is permitted the day of the procedure.
You will see the Kybella® take effect in approximately 48 hours, with continued improvement over the next month. It may require multiple treatments.
