What is Restylane®?
Restylane® is a smooth volumetric gel filler that is primarily used to rejuvenate the lower face. Restylane® is an FDA-approved hyaluronic acid gel filler designed to smooth facial lines, fill creases, and restore volume to the nasolabial folds and smile lines around the lips. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance which is safe and reliable for long-term correction of facial aging.Restylane® differs from other hyaluronic acid fillers because of its fine consistency and long-lasting effects. Patients can expect the effects of Restylane® to last over one year in the face.
Dr. Trussler has significant experience with Restylane® injections and will listen to your goals and evaluate your face to determine if Restylane® is the right product for your in-office facial rejuvenation.
What Are My Restylane® Options?
There are numerous types of volumetric fillers to choose from. Hyaluronic acid fillers are natural, safe, and reliable with very few side effects. Hyaluronic acid fillers are temporary and are broken down by the body’s own enzymes called hyaluronidases.Cross-linking provides stability to the hyaluronic acid gel and in the case of Restylane® prevents short-term resorption. Patients can now choose Restylane®-L, a newer, FDA-approved formula that contains lidocaine, a local anesthetic, to minimize the mild discomfort previously associated with this treatment.
Restylane® Treatment Areas
Areas Of Treatment With Restylane®:
Nasolabial folds: (Smile lines) are the lines created at the junction of the cheek and mouth area which extends for the outside nasal area to the corners of the mouth.
Marionnette Lines: Extend from the corners of the mouth to the jawline.
Upper and Lower Lips: Can be shaped, defined and filled with Restylane®.
Who Is A Good Candidate Fro Restylane Injections?
Restylane® injections are ideal for patients looking for in-office facial rejuvenation or volume replacement. Restylane® does not take the place of a facelift but can smooth moderate to deep lines to give a younger refreshed appearance that will last for over one year. Restylane® can be injected into the lips (lip augmentation) to define to naturally define the borders of the lips and give more volume to the upper and lower lips.
What To Consider With Restylane® Injections
When considering any volumetric filler consider the amount of filler needed to correct each area. Restylane®, just like other hyaluronic acid fillers are reliable and what you see in the office immediately after injection will last long term. Hyaluronic acid fillers do absorb some water when in place so conservative volumes are recommended, but a full face will not be treated with just one syringe. Restylane® is typically loaded into one 1cc syringe and commonly two syringes are injected per area. Dr. Trussler will listen to your goals and discuss the options and amount of filler needed to treat your desired areas.
What Should I Expect From My Restylane® Treatment?
Through injectable fillers like Restylane®, patients can achieve a natural, youthful appearance with minimal downtime and few side effects. With realistic expectations and good overall health, most patients are satisfied with the results of this procedure, though volumetric replacement is only one component of in-office facial rejuvenation. Ideal patients should be taking care of their skin with active skin care and/or skin resurfacing, as well as the addition of neuromodulators like BOTOX® or Dysport®. Restylane® is volume dependent, and deeper lines and multiple areas will require multiple syringes of the product. Restylane® will last over one year, but re-injection may be needed earlier to maintain the volumetric correction.
Restylane® Treatment Process
Restylane® injections are done in the office by Dr. Trussler. After a full face consultation where your goals will be discussed and your face and skin evaluated, a treatment plan will be presented, including the amount of Restylane® needed for each area. Prior to injection, the areas will be anesthetized with topical numbing cream and/or local anesthesia. The skin is cleaned with an anti-bacterial solution before injections to limit any risk of infection. The areas of injections are cooled with ice packs to add to limit any localized bruising or swelling. Dr. Trussler primarily uses Restylane®-L and injects with a technique that will be comfortable and reliable. The product is injected under the skin at different depths depending on the area of treatment. Correction is confirmed by the patient with a mirror after the product is placed and massaged by Dr. Trussler.
Results Of Restylane®
The results of a Restylane® injection are visible immediately after the procedure and will continue to improve over the next week as any swelling and bruising subside. Most patients see an improvement in the treatment areas and only need one treatment to achieve optimal results. Results may vary and touch up treatments may be required to maintain results, but Restylane® can smooth lines and wrinkles for up to a year.
Restylane® Recovery
The lips may swell more than other areas, but this can be limited to the use of cooling ice packs. Dr. Trussler encourages the use of topical ice packs every 4 to 6 hours for the first 2 days to limit bruising and swelling. Massage is not needed, as this can disrupt the placement of the product under the skin. Physical activity can be resumed the day after the injections.
