Breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a surgical procedure performed to reshape and support the breasts that have sagged and lost volume as a result of aging, pregnancy, weight loss, and gravity. The breast is reshaped by a combination of removing breast skin, repositioning the nipple areolar complex, and contouring the shape of the breast. As a result of a breast lift or mastopexy, the breasts are more youthful and firmer. The nipple and areola are typically resized during this procedure to further enhance the appearance of the breast. See What our Patients are Saying

Dr. Trussler is great at what he does! He is polite and so are the ladies in his office. After breastfeeding 3 children my breast needed work. I did some research and had consults with 5 highly rated plastic surgeons in Austin including Dr. Trussler. After my consult with him I knew he was the surgeon for me. I got my breast lift and implant done with him in 2016 and I am loving my results. My confidence level has sky rocketed. I couldn't have asked for anything better. Thank you Dr. Trussler and all of your staff ?

What Are My Options For A Breast Lift?

There are numerous options offered to the patient who inquires about a breast lift with Dr. Trussler. The type mastopexy procedure depends on the patient's goals, including the choice for reduced, equal or larger volume breasts, as well as the amount of sag in the breast, the firmness of the breast tissue being lifted, the size of the areola, and any previous breast procedures.

The types of mastopexy offered by Dr. Trussler include:

Standard Breast Lift (Mastopexy) with a vertical or inverted T scar pattern which reshapes the breast and repositions the nipple making it more youthful and at least one half cup size smaller.

Breast Lift with a Breast Implant (Mastopexy-Augmentation) with a vertical or inverted T scar pattern which reshapes the breast and repositions the nipple over a silicone or saline breast implant which adds volume to the breast.

Periareolar Breast Lift with a Breast Implant repositions and reduces the size the nipple areola over a silicone or saline breast implant which adds shape and volume to the breast with a scar around the areola.

Mastopexy with Auto-Augmentation repositions the breast tissue to give volume without the use of a breast implant through an inverted T scar pattern, as well as repositions the nipple areola.

Breast Lift Surgery

A breast lift procedure is commonly performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia and usually takes two to three hours depending on what type of lift is to be performed. A breast lift is commonly part of a Mommy Makeover procedure which is a phrase typically used to define a grouping of breast and abdominal procedures that can help correct the effects of pregnancy.

  • In all breast lift procedures, the incisions are made around the nipple areola to reduce its size and facilitate the ability to move it upwards.
  • In a standard breast lift, the excess breast skin is removed and then tightened around the repositioned nipple.
  • In a mastopexy augmentation procedure, the breast is reshaped after the implant is placed under the muscle and then the excess breast skin is removed and tightened around the repositioned nipple.
  • In an auto-augmentation, the breast tissue is wrapped around the nipple areola to give the appearance and firmness of a breast implant. The breast skin is then tightened around the repositioned nipple.
  • The majority of breast incisions are closed with stitches under the skin. Dr. Trussler does place deeper supportive sutures which help support the breast over time.
  • The nipple areola is sized so that they are round and equal in size. These incisions are closed with stitches that need to be removed though limit any scarring around the areola.

Considerations

A breast lift is a common procedure for many women seeking to enhance the appearance of their breasts, especially after having children. The ideal candidates for a breast lift are healthy, non-smoking women without a personal or significant family history of breast cancer who have:

  • Sagging breasts
  • Breasts that have lost shape or volume
  • Breast that has sagged over breast implants
  • Breasts that are flat or elongated
  • Nipples or areolas that are enlarged
  • One breast lower than the other
  • Breasts that have been overstretched by large breast implants

Expectations

Women considering a breast lift should take into account the type of scar pattern and the acceptability of a breast implant when sorting through mastopexy options. Not every patient is a candidate for every type of breast lift that Dr. Trussler offers, though during the consultation process the right breast lift for you will hopefully meet your expectations. It is recommended that women still planning to have children postpone this procedure, as pregnancy and nursing can stretch the lifted breast. A breast lift does not negate the need to wear a bra after the procedure, though some supportive relief is commonly provided with firmer, lifted and smaller breasts.

How Does A Breast Lift Differ From Breast Augmentation?

The goal of a breast lift is not to replace lost volume, but to return the breasts to a higher position on the chest. Dr. Trussler does this by removing excess fatty tissue and trimming excess skin. Breast augmentation is meant to add volume to the breasts without removing sagging skin or reworking underlying tissues. Many of Dr. Trussler's patients opt to have a breast lift combined with augmentation. This brings the breasts back up, removes excess skin, and adds volume and shape.

What Are The Risks And Possible Side Effects With Breast Lift Surgery?

Breast lifts are major surgery, so they include the typical risks involved with any surgery: bleeding or the formation of a hematoma, reaction to anesthesia, infection, and slow incision healing.

Risks related to this particular procedure include:

  • Changes in nipple or breast sensation (these usually resolve within a few months)
  • Irregularities in breast contour or shape
  • Breast asymmetry
  • Necrosis of fat tissue
  • Fluid accumulation
  • Possibility of the need for revision surgery

How Long Does A Breast Lift Procedure Take?

Dr. Trussler performs breast lifts as outpatient procedures with the patient under general anesthesia. Depending on the incision type and the amount of excess skin that needs to be removed, the procedure usually takes from 2-3 hours.

Will my breast lift results be permanent?

There's no stopping the downward pull of gravity and the weakening of support tissues that is a part of normal aging, so your breasts will sag some more as you age. But, they will start from a much higher, younger position after your breast lift. The degree of future sagging and flattening will be much less than would occur without having had a breast lift.

Will Breast And Nipple Sensitivity Be Affected By A Breast Lift?

Breast lifts involve a good deal of repositioning of breast tissue, and this can affect nipple sensation in the short term. The nipples can be either numb or very sensitive. This is because the surgery usually disturbs some of the nerve pathways. But regular sensation returns in all but a very small percentage of patients.

Still, since the areolae are usually repositioned in a breast lift, there is the possibility that some loss of sensation or sensitivity could occur.

Overall breast sensitivity should not be affected. As with the nipples, there may be some temporary loss of sensation, but these issues should resolve as you heal.

Will I be able to breastfeed after breast lift surgery?

Most women are able to breastfeed after mastopexy, but this can vary between patients. Because the procedure affects the breast tissue, there is a possibility it can impact the milk glands and the ability to breastfeed. Still, in most cases, the patient retains breastfeeding capability after her lift procedure.
