Congenital Breast Surgery
Breast deformities are common in many women, and may range from slight asymmetry to a lack of breast development. These deformities can lead to significant functional, aesthetic and psychological concerns that can affect many aspects of the patient’s life. Dr. Trussler can help patients with nearly any type of breast deformity with a main goal of restoring a normal appearance and symmetry to both breasts.
What are my options?
Reconstructive procedures are available for a wide range of congenital breast deformities, including:
- Polymastia – presence of an additional breast
- Lack of breast – rare condition involving no breast or areola development
- Flat or inverted nipples – caused by tethering of short ducts under the nipples
- Enlarged nipples
- Lack of nipples – condition known as athelia, usually coincides with lack of breast (amastia)
- Tuberous deformities – tight breasts with herniated tissue and enlarged areola
- Poland syndrome – underdeveloped chest muscles and breast
- Asymmetry – two different sized breasts
Dr. Trussler will develop a customized surgical procedure for each patient based on their individual needs and overall health. Treatment may include excision of extra tissue, tightening of skin, use of breast implants, nipple and areola reconstruction and other techniques to restore the deformed breast.
Considerations
Congenital breast reconstruction is most effectively performed on young women whose breasts have finished or are close to finishing growth, although specialized procedures may be performed on young children with serious breast deformities. However, not all breast deformities can be treated through surgical reconstruction. Patients with certain health conditions may not be ideal candidates for reconstruction, Dr. Trussler will evaluate your condition, as well as your overall health in order to perform the most successful treatment.
Expectations
Patients who undergo congenital breast reconstruction performed by Dr. Trussler are often able to achieve successful results from their procedure and enjoy breasts that are more normal in appearance and more symmetrical than their previous state. It is important for patients to realize that breasts not be identical after treatment, but that rarely are natural healthy breasts perfectly symmetrical. Dr. Trussler will do his best to perform a successful correction surgery customized for each patient’s individual needs.
Surgery
The type of treatment performed for congenital breast deformities depends on the extent of each patient’s individual condition. Dr. Trussler performs a wide range of procedures to correct congenital breast deformities, which may include chest wall reconstruction, breast implants, expandable implants, nipple and areola construction, excision of extra nipples, reduction of enlarged areola, reconstruction of underdeveloped muscles, and more.
Most of these procedures are performed under general anesthesia on an outpatient basis, although some may require a short hospital stay. The length of the procedure can vary significantly, as some are straightforward procedures and others are complex, multi-faceted corrections.
After Care & Recovery
After congenital breast surgery, drainage tubes may be used for the first 24 hours. Patients will likely need to wear a surgical dressing or compression garments for the first few days after treatment in order to facilitate proper healing. Recovery is often comparable to other types of breast surgery, including breast augmentation, breast reduction and breast reconstruction following mastectomy.
As each patient’s treatment is different, Dr. Trussler will provide specific post-operative instruction for each individual patient. Most patients can achieve satisfactory results from one or more surgical procedures.
