Reconstructive surgery is performed to improve the function or appearance of a part of the body that is abnormal because of congenital deformities (birth defects) or developmental deformities (i.e. damaged from injury, infection, disease, surgery, etc.). Reconstructive surgery differs from cosmetic surgery, which is performed to change the appearance of a normal feature. Patients of all ages can be helped, whether it's a child with cleft lip, a teenager with a broken nose, a woman seeking breast reconstruction after a mastectomy, or a man undergoing skin cancer removal.
Abdominal Wall Reconstruction
Abdominal wall reconstruction is performed to treat abdominal hernias that may cause pain, fever, blood in the stool as well as physical disfigurement as a result of a weakness within the wall. Reconstruction involves repairing and strengthening the abdominal wall with stitching or a synthetic mesh. This procedure may be performed traditionally or laparoscopically, with the laparoscopic technique offering patients smaller incisions and shorter recovery times.
Recovery can vary depending on the size of the affected area, but usually requires a short hospital stay as well as a short period of bleeding, swelling and tenderness.

Mohs Surgery Reconstruction
Mohs Micrographic Surgery is intended to remove cancers while preserving as much healthy tissue as possible and leaving only a small wound. Unfortunately, even this highly precise technique can result in a large wound or a scar, which can be especially upsetting if the tumor was on a cosmetically critical area of the body such as the face or hand. Having a plastic surgeon close the initial wound ensures that post-operative scarring will be kept to a minimum and may even be unnoticeable. Patients who have had Mohs surgery in the past can also come to Dr. Trussler for scar revision.

Hand Surgery
Surgery can restore function, relieve pain and improve the appearance of the hands for patients suffering from cysts, nerve conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, arthritis, injuries, birth defects (e.g. webbed or extra fingers) or other problems. Hand surgeons trained in microsurgery can also re-attach or reconstruct severed fingers after a trauma.
Dr. Trussler also performs finger replantations.
