Pediatric plastic surgery encompasses a group of reconstructive surgical procedures that correct or improve the appearance and function of external deformities. Pediatric procedures account for about three percent of all plastic surgeries procedures performed in the US each year. These procedures require specialized, multi-disciplinary care to preserve the growing bodies of children from infants to young adults.
Dr. Trussler’s general pediatric plastic surgery practice in the Department of Plastic Surgery at Children’s Medical Center provides specialized care to patients who suffer from traumatic injuries, in addition to a full spectrum of general reconstruction and skin care. The comprehensive, multidisciplinary team offers expert care in the areas of:
- microsurgical reconstruction including lower extremity reconstruction
- skin tumors including hemangiomas and congenital birthmarks
- scar care including keloid scars
- Reconstructive procedures of the face including the repair of facial fractures
- congenital hand and foot differences including webbed and extra digits
- traumatic hand and upper extremity injuries
- adolescent breast and pelvic reconstruction surgery
- abdominal and chest wall reconstruction
There are individual risks associated with each type of procedure, as well as general risks such as infection, anesthesia complications, excessive bleeding, fever and others.
Dr. Trussler will discuss the risk of your child's procedure before surgery. All procedures are performed within a pediatric facility surrounded by pediatric specialists, which will place both the patient and family at ease.
Dr. Trussler and his staff, will provide long-term, dedicated care to the pediatric plastic surgery patient, in a caring, child friendly environment. They respect the long-term relationship between patient families and their primary care physician. Following completion of acute care or surgical treatment, patients are routinely returned to the follow-up care of their community primary care physicians.
